GORDON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
JANUARY 18, 2011


The Gordon County Board of Commissioners held their Regular Meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. in the main courtroom of the Gordon County Courthouse.

Chairman Bailey called the meeting to order.

INVOCATION AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Invocation was led by Rev. John Allen and the pledge of allegiance was led by Chairman Bailey.

WELCOME

Chairman Bailey welcomed everyone to the meeting. Chairman Bailey recognized the sponsors and the students in attendance from the Gordon County Youth Leadership class and asked each one to stand and introduce themselves and tell what school they attend.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Chairman Bailey asked if there were any additions, omissions, or deletions to the Minutes for the Work Session January 4, 2011, and the Regular Meeting January 4, 2011. Commissioner Long made a motion to approve the minutes. Commissioner Hood seconded the motion and all voted aye. Minutes approved.

ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT

Administrator Dowling read the report.

COMMISSIONERS’ REPORT

Commissioner Long commented that he would also like to thank Gordon Hospital for their help during the recent snowstorm and he also welcomed the Youth Leadership class to the meeting.

CONSIDERATION OF NEW BUSINESS
  • REAPPOINTMENT OF SAM PAYNE TO THE NORTHWEST GEORGIA REGIONAL COMMISSION FOR A ONE-YEAR TERM ENDING 12/31/2011
    • Administrator Dowling advised the Board that this item is a reappointment to the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission for a one-year term ending December 31, 2011 for Sam Payne.
    • Commissioner Long made a motion to reappoint Sam Payne to the Regional Commission. Commissioner Steward seconded the motion and Commissioners Long, Hood, and Steward voted aye. Motion passed.
  • REAPPOINTMENT OF CATHY HARRISON TO THE CALHOUN/GORDON COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY FOR A THREE-YEAR TERM ENDING 6/30/2013
    • Administrator Dowling advised the Board that this item is a reappointment to the Calhoun/Gordon County Airport Authority for a three-year term ending June 30, 2013 for Cathy Harrison.
    • Commissioner Steward made a motion to reappoint Cathy Harrison to the Calhoun/Gordon County Airport Authority. Commissioner Hood seconded the motion and Commissioners Steward, Hood, and Long voted aye. Motion passed.
  • AUTHORIZATION TO PREPARE AND DISTRIBUTE BID SPECIFICATIONS TO DEMOLISH THE PARKING DECK AND THE OLD JAIL
    • Administrator Dowling advised the Board that this is for Board authorization for County staff to prepare and distribute bid specifications for demolition of the parking deck and the old jail building.
    • Commissioner Long made a motion to approve and authorize County staff to prepare bid specs for the demolition of the parking deck and old jail. Commissioner Hood seconded the motion and Commissioners Long, Hood, and Steward voted aye. Motion passed.
  • RESOLUTION TO NAME THE BOAT RAMP AND PARK ON HIGHWAY 156 IN GORDON COUNTY “THE VERNON BROOKSHIRE MEMORIAL PARK”
    • County Attorney Hutchinson advised the Board that this is a resolution concerning the boat ramp and park on Highway 156. The Department of Natural Resources has requested that the Board of Commissioners assign a name to the newly constructed boat ramp on Highway 156 and the Board has previously discussed the idea of naming the boat ramp and the park honoring Vernon Brookshire. There was a request from the Brookshire family asking to incorporate the Brookshire name when naming this boat ramp that was constructed on property previously owned by that family. This resolution by the Board would officially name the boat ramp and park “The Vernon Brookshire Memorial Park”.
    • Commissioner Long made a motion to approve the resolution naming the boat ramp and park “The Vernon Brookshire Memorial Park”. Commissioner Hood seconded the motion and Commissioners Long, Hood, and Steward voted aye. Motion passed.

ADJOURNMENT

Commissioner Long made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Hood seconded the motion and all voted aye. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
