1/19/2016 BOC Work Session Minutes
GORDON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
WORK SESSION MINUTES
JANUARY 19, 2016
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners held a Work Session Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Administration Building
Chairman Hood called the meeting to order.
The Board discussed each item on the agenda for the Regular Meeting and made no changes or additions.
Mr. Christopher Bogue of 140 Valley View Circle came before the Board to request the county to amend the ordinance and allow for backyard chickens on less than 5 acres. Mr. Bogue said he has about ¾ of an acre and wishes to have a small flock, maybe 5 hens to furnish his family with eggs and also family pets. Other advantages were to use the hens to take out bugs, also chickens are good for the soil as fertilizer and their scratching breaking up the soil.
The Board then discussed amending the ordinance regarding chickens and poultry kept for non-commercial purposes. Attorney Ledbetter referenced a draft amendment to the ordinance allowing backyard chickens to be permitted in three zoning areas and on ½ acre of land. Other restrictions having to do with enclosures for the chickens and boundaries were included on the draft. Attorney Ledbetter advised that he would ask for comments from the Board and then have public hearings that would be required. The ordinance amendment would then be considered by the Board at a future meeting. Chairman Hood suggested including other animals and also mentioned getting some input from Doug Ralston since his family is involved in showing animals.
Administrator King advised the Board about the recent tour of the Resaca Battlefield by staff and others. Administrator King said the site is now basically complete and the punch list satisfied. He asked if the Board members would like to tour the battlefield prior to it being presented for acceptance by the county, possibly by the next Board meeting on February 2nd. Board members agreed to tour the battlefield on Saturday, January 30th at 12:00 noon.
Commissioner Gazaway made a motion to close the Work Session. Commissioner Sexton seconded the motion and all voted aye.
There being no further business the Work Session adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
