Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission
February 4, 2013
Regular Meeting
Vice Chairman Surdykowski called the meeting to order at approximately 5:38 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from January 7, 2013 meeting were presented for review and approval. Jane Powers Weldon made motion to approve minutes; seconded by David Mitchell. All voted aye.
Unfinished Business
David Mitchell stated Alvin Long had said there were weather delays with the Resaca Battlefield Park project. Monies are still needed for the building of the museum, possibly grant monies and/or group/individual donations.
David Mitchell stated that last month he had tried to locate Banks Chapel Cemetery. He spoke with a gentleman who offered to show him the location of the cemetery, where Banks Chapel Church was previously located, before it had burned in the early 1980’s. R. Stanley Chambers stated there is possibly another cemetery located between the old hospital and city recreation department.
There was brief conversation concerning locations of various different cemeteries. David Mitchell stated Gordon County Historical Society will meet on February 21, 2013. Charlie Ryan will be speaking on Battle of Kings Mountain. Dinner will be served at 6:30 with program to immediately follow. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Jane Powers Weldon stated Calhoun Historic Preservation’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2013.
New Business
David Mitchell spoke with David Gibson in reference to East Damascus Church. David Mitchell was given a name of a Mrs. West, supposedly oldest member of East Damascus Church. He spoke with Mrs. West via telephone and she stated she would be willing to speak to him in reference to the history of East Damascus Church. She informed David Mitchell that the church was started between the years of 1850 & 1855.
Mrs. West was not sure who had old records of church but she would ask around and try to find the records. Church members currently have monthly meetings. Mrs. West stated East Damascus Church was possibly the oldest standing church building in Gordon County.

Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2013. David Mitchell made motion to adjourn; seconded by Jane Powers Weldon. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:08 p.m.
