GORDON COUNTY PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION
PUBLIC HEARING
FEBRUARY 10, 2014
The Gordon County Planning Commission held a Public Hearing on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Gordon County Administration Building for the purpose of hearing variance and zoning change requests.
Chairman Rains called the meeting to order and advised all present of the sign-up sheets available for those who wish to address the Planning Commission on any of the zoning or variance change applications.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Butch Layson to approve the minutes of the previous meeting of January 13, 2014. Jerry Lovelace seconded the motion. All voted aye. The minutes were approved as written.
VARIANCE APPLICATION #V14-01, JUDY WEBB BAILEY
Chairman Rains read variance application #V14-01, Judy Webb Bailey, requesting a variance on a 17.49 acre tract located at 937 Oak Grove Road, Calhoun to reduce required setback for a chicken house to adjacent dwelling. Ms. Bailey represented the request explaining that she needed to relocate 2 chicken houses across the road from the original location due to the construction of the South Calhoun By-pass on Oak Grove Road. The chicken houses will be 350 feet to a mobile home instead of the required 500 feet. Loretta Webb and Hazel Bagwell, area homeowners, spoke in opposition with concerns of additional chicken houses in the area because of the smell and fluff. Ms. Webb was also concerned with the fact that the new chicken houses would be closer to her chicken houses and since they grew for a different company that they could lose their company. Ms. Bailey added that there were 47 chicken houses within a ½ mile radius. All adjoining property owners had been notified.
Ursula Desrosier, Zoning Administrator for Gordon County, recommended that the variance request identified as Application #V14-01 be approved.
Ron Free stated that it was a little late to change the fact of this many chicken houses in one area, but this would just be relocating and not adding more. Ron Free made the motion to approve the variance application identified as #V14-01 as requested. Jerry Lovelace seconded the motion. All voted aye. The variance was granted. The thirty- (30) day appeal period was explained.
ADDITIONAL BUSINESS
There was a brief discussion to hold off on any possible changes to the ULDC until after the new county administrator was hired. Also, Ms. Desrosier informed the Planning Commission that the subject of a pay increase in the 2015 budget will be included, but the final decision would be the Board of Commissioners. There being no additional business, Ron Free made the motion to adjourn. Jerry Lovelace seconded the motion. All voted aye. The meeting was adjourned at 6:24 p.m.
