Regular Meeting
Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:13 p.m. welcoming all in attendance. Ursula Richardson presented an overview of March 2, 2020 minutes. Jeff Henderson made motion to approve minutes; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.
Unfinished Business
Gordon County operated Civil War Parks shut down shortly last March due to Covid-19 and reopened in April 2020. There has been criminal activity at the park…someone had broken into storage containers that were on site. Surveillance equipment was installed for one month and then removed. County owned surveillance cameras were stolen from top of the building they were installed on.
GDOT Highway historical site green direction signs have had no activity since 2020 due to
Covid-19.
Trust for Public Land is no longer involved with Chitwood Farm; farm is now an LLC. Chitwood Farm LLC is compiling a comprehension plan with Georgia Forestry.
Commission Reports
Jeff Henderson briefly mentioned an article about Dr. Gideon in the winter edition of the Georgia Backroads Magazine.
Jeff Henderson noted that contributions to the Historical Society continue to improve.
Betty Ann Surdykowski shared a brochure from 150th Anniversary. She will have copies made and distribute to each HPC member at a later date.
New Business
Gordon County Board of Commissioners approved Kenny Padgett and David Mitchell to another HPC term ending June 1, 2023.
Betty Ann Surdkyowski’s HPC term ends June 1, 2021; she wishes to seek reappointment.
Jeff Henderson made motion for Kenny Padgett to remain Chairman and Betty Ann Surdykowski to remain Vice Chairman; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye.
Jeff Henderson made motion allowing Resaca Church of God to host Easter Sunrise Service at Resaca Battlefield Park; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye. Chairman Padgett will compose letter to Board of Commissioners for approval.
Chairman Padgett stated annual Battle of Resaca Reenactment will be held May 14 – May 15, 2021.
HPC members will inquire on having a joint meeting with Calhoun HPC later this year.
HPC briefly discussed future involvement with assisting with the planning of the 175th Anniversary of Gordon County in 2025.
Chairman Padgett presented HPC with an application for membership into the Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commission. Yearly fees are $30.00 and run July 1st – June 30th. HPC briefly discussed benefits of membership. Betty Anny Surdykowski made motion to join the Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commission; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye. Ursula Richardson will begin getting the application processed.
Chairman Padgett stated next scheduled meeting is April 5th but HPC will only meet if there is business to be discussed. Jeff Henderson made motion to adjourn; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:39 p.m.
