Regular meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:30 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from March 3, 2014 meeting were presented for review and approval. Jane Powers Weldon made motion to approve minutes; seconded by Jeff Henderson. All voted aye.

Unfinished Business

Chairman Padgett stated DNR (Department of Natural Resources) has agreed to temporarily open the park for reenactment to be held May 16-18, 2014.

A national tour was held on March 16, 2014 was held at Resaca Battlefield Park. Tour was attended by 55 persons from around the nation who are involved with Civil War preservation.

City of Calhoun is supporting Battle Reenactment by placing banners on light posts throughout downtown Calhoun advertising reenactment.

Betty Ann Surdykowski stated a billboard has been placed on I-75 N between exits 312-315, at Sharon’s Silk Florist, advertising upcoming reenactment.

Alvin Long stated Gordon County Historical Society is continuing to work to complete conference room.

Jane Powers Weldon questioned if HPC needed to send any information to the established email group. Chairman Padgett suggested sending information regarding upcoming reenactment as well as sending any highlight information the commission has recently discussed.

New Business

Jeff Henderson spoke briefly of the National Civil War Trust “Park Day” held on Saturday, April 5, 2014.

Chairman Padgett is working with Georgia Civil War Commission to obtain permission from the Georgia Building Authority to place an historic marker adjacent to the entrance of Confederate Cemetery in regards to Mary Greene.

Jeff Henderson invited HPC members to attend Confederate Memorial Day service at the cemetery on Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Chairman Padgett invited HPC members to attend Battle of Resaca Reenactment to be held May 16-18, 2014.

Chairman Padgett was contacted by Chandler Stephens, Marvin Taylor’s granddaughter. Ms. Stephens’ grandfather owns the Stan Watie house, and they have recovered some civil war artifacts.

Chairman Padgett stated next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. Jane Powers Weldon made motion to adjourn; seconded by Alvin Long. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:48 p.m.
