May 7, 2012

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 6 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from April 2, 2012 meeting were presented for review and
approval. David Mitchell made motion to approve minutes; seconded by R. Stanley  Chambers. All voted aye.

Unfinished Business & Reports

Chairman Padgett stated Fort Wayne project is progressing.

David Mitchell gave brief update on cemetery project and Boy Scout project that will take place at Old Concord Cemetery, located on Highway 53 at Salacoa Creek.

R. Stanley Chambers stated the doll auction through the Historical Society is set to take place on May 12th; auction is being handled by Flipper McDaniel. He stated Peggy Autry resigned from the board and Ken Padgett was nominated to serve on the board.

Chairman Padgett stated GPS project will resume this summer.

Chairman Padgett expressed his thanks for all that attended the historic marker ceremony at the Calhoun Depot. He stated trailblazer signs were placed the previous Friday at the entrance of the Depot as well as one placed at the Gordon County Jail.

New Business

There was brief discussion to long term goals. R. Stanley Chambers questioned if some of the historic homes in Gordon County could be designated as such. Betty Ann Surdykowski stated she will try and contact Karen Locke in reference to the HPC touring her home.

Chairman Padgett stated there was a meeting on May 3, 2012, in reference to the State Battlefield Site, with Representative Meadows, DNR Commissioner Mark Williams, Alvin Long, several staff of Governor’s Office and DNR, and Jimmy Phillips. He stated discussion was concerning funding for the museum and interpretative center.

148th Anniversary for the Battle of Resaca will take place May 19th – May 20th, 2012.

Chairman Padgett stated a new historical marker will be dedicated tentatively on May 15, 2012 @ 11:00 a.m. in front of the Gordon County Jail. Marker will interpret the railroad bridge and Fort Wayne.

New Echota 50th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony will take place this upcoming Saturday, May 12, 2012 @ 2:00 p.m..

String Band Festival will be held at the fairgrounds in Calhoun.


Next meeting scheduled for Monday, June 4, 2012 @ 6 p.m.. R. Stanley Chambers
made motion to adjourn; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye. Meeting
was adjourned at approximately 6:10 p.m..
