Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
June 4, 2012


Regular Meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:50 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from May 7, 2012 meeting were presented for review and approval. Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to approve minutes; seconded by R. Stanley Chambers. All voted aye.

New Business

Chairman Padgett stated equipment will begin to arrive for work to start at the State Battlefield Site. All contracts have been signed; project is to be completed in 300 days for site to be open to public.

Chairman Padgett stated construction has already started at Fort Wayne site. Projected opening of Fort Wayne is June 2013.

A new historical marker was dedicated at the Gordon County Jail. Marker depicts battles over the River Bridge and Fort Wayne. Chamber of Commerce has a 5-10 year maintenance contract on marker.

Betty Ann Surdykowski stated she spoke with Mary Ann Brooks in reference to the Yarborough Mill Home. She stated Mary Ann told her the owner of the house, Karen Llop, stated she is moving but has not sold the house. Karen told Mary Ann that she has history on the home and she would share that information with Historical Society and Historic Preservation Commission.

R. Stanley Chambers gave a brief update on the Historical Society’s doll sale. He stated they sold approximately 25% of the dolls. He stated Flipper McDaniel stated he is still working on getting an offer for the remaining dolls to be sold.

There was brief discussion in regards to upcoming library renovations.

Old Business

Chairman Padgett stated he received a phone call from Anthony Moore in reference to two graves that are possibly from the 1700’s on Newtown Creek Road.

David Mitchell stated he was given information in reference to a cemetery possibly behind Banks Church.

Chairman Padgett stated Battle of Resaca turned out well this year. He stated the filming crew will begin filming on Wednesday and will leave on Sunday. He stated they are hiring re-enactors for the film; the project will provide approximately 300 temporary jobs. He stated the filming will have a minor economic impact with Gordon County businesses.

Chairman Padgett stated HPC needed to talk with DNR in reference to the Trimble marker on Highway 140.

There was discussion to changing HPC meeting time from 6:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. David Mitchell made motion to change meeting time to 5:30 p.m.; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.

David Mitchell made motion for officers of the HPC to remain the same; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.

Adjournment

Next meeting will be Monday, July 9th, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.. Meeting will be second Monday in July due to 4th of July holiday week. David Mitchell made motion to adjourn; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:20 p.m.
