Regular Meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:15 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from April 4, 2022 were presented for review and approval. Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to approve; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye.

Commission Reports

Betty Ann Surdykowski presented an article regarding the Remember the Removal Trail of Tears motorcycle ride that left New Echota on May 30, 2022. The riders ride approximately 50-75 miles per day.

David Mitchell expressed his concern of a cemetery located on Highway 41 South where there has been some land grading taking place.

Unfinished Business

Chairman Padgett said the parks continue to be heavily visited.

Town of Resaca’s Civil War Museum is anticipated to be open sometime in July 2022.

Interpretative Sign request for Resaca Battlefield Park has been tabled until Chairman Padgett can discuss the standards with County Administrator Jim Ledbetter.

New Business

Friends of Resaca Battlefield meeting was held on March 1, 2022 and Fort Wayne Trail signs were approved. Signs have been installed and are located at all intersections on the trail.

Chairman Padgett provided HPC members with a copy of the new Chamber of Commerce Community Magazine.

Chairman Padgett presented HPC members with a request from Friends of Resaca to host a Civil War Relic Identification Day on Saturday June 25, 2022 from 9 am – 12 pm at the pavilion located at the Resaca Battlefield Historic Site. (request filed with minutes) David Mitchell made motion to recommend the request be granted; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye. Chairman Padgett will forward request to County Clerk, Annette Berry, to have request added to Board of Commissioner’s next meeting to be approved. (request to BOC also on file with minutes)

Sons of Confederate Veterans National Reunion tour will visit Resaca Battlefield Park on July 21, 2022. Several hundred attendees are expected to attend.

David Mitchell made motion to keep the current HPC officers; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye. (Kenny Padgett – Chairman/Betty Ann Surdykowski – Vice Chairman)

Next tentative HPC meeting will be August 1, 2022 @ 5:15 p.m.. Jim Weaver made motion to adjourn; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:28 p.m.
