Regular Meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 514 p.m. welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from March 1, 2021 were presented for review and approval. Chairman Padgett noted one correction to the minutes. Minutes will be updated with the correction. Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to approve amended minutes; seconded by Jeff Henderson. All voted aye.

Commission Reports

Jeff Henderson shared an article with HPC members regarding Oothcalooga being cited as the county seat June 3, 1850. Jeff Henderson visited with Dr. Gideon family earlier this year. Gideon family lives in Chattanooga, TN area and has agreed to help with Gideon cemetery site cleanup and in return Jeff Henderson and anyone interested would assist with slave cemetery cleanup near Chattanooga.

Chairman Padgett informed HPC of vandalism at the Resaca Battlefield Park gate entrance.

Chairman Padgett reported Battle of Resaca Reenactment was the biggest in 20-25 years. Approximately 9000 people were in attendance with 1400 re enactors participating in this year’s event.

Unfinished Business

Parks continue to be heavily visited and recently two national tours visited the sites.

Ursula Richardson stated there has been no response after numerous attempts to contact the Georgia Alliance Preservation Commission regarding membership. Jeff Henderson made motion to remove Georgia Alliance Preservation Commission membership from future HPC agendas; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.

Resaca Church of God cancelled Easter services at Resaca Battlefield site due to flooding in the area.

Chairman Padgett emailed City HPC in regards to having a joint meeting; he has received no response.

Chairman Padgett purchased a 150th Gordon County anniversary coin on EBay and shared with HPC. HPC briefly discussed Gordon County’s upcoming 175th Anniversary in 2025.

New Business

Jeff Henderson made motion for current officers to remain – Chairman: Kenny Padgett
Vice Chairman: Betty Ann Surdykowski; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye.

Ursula Richardson presented a proposed rezoning located on Highway 225 @ Newtown Church Road, located within the Echota Historic Overlay district. Proposed rezoning is for a convenience store. HPC briefly discussed rezoning. Jeff Henderson made motion to approve proposed rezoning with stipulation that rezoning and construction of convenience store meets all ULDC guidelines and/or restrictions for property located within Echota Historic Overlay district; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye.

Adjournment

July HPC meeting will be dismissed unless business presents itself. Next scheduled HPC meeting is August 2, 2021. Jeff Henderson made motion to adjourn; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowksi. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:37 p.m.
