July 1, 2013


Regular Meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:37 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance, including two new board members, Jeff Henderson and Alvin Long. Approval of minutes from June 3, 2013 meeting will be held at next meeting, August 5, 2013, due to new members not having prior time to review minutes.

Unfinished Business

Chairman Padgett visited stated Battlefield site two weeks ago marking the interpretative signage location along roadway. Project is approximately 85% complete. Final work is underway for restroom facility and pavilion, along with installing one more kiosk. Tentative opening date is first of September.

Chairman Padgett thanked former County Commission Alvin Long and the board he served with and his dedication to the Fort Wayne project and the current opening of the site. Chairman Padgett stated there was a great turn out for the grand opening of Fort Wayne site.

GPS readings are complete on all located cemeteries within Gordon County, as well as rewriting proper directions to each cemetery.

Chairman Padgett stated property owner of Wright’s Cemetery, Jeff Schick, cannot be reached by phone, for Matt Landry to clean up cemetery for Eagle Scout project. Jeff Henderson stated Gideon Cemetery needs to be cleaned. Betty Ann Surdykowski stated she will forward contact information for Matt Landry to Jeff Henderson.

GPS historic markers project will resume this fall.

New Business

County BOC has requested the HPC to establish by-laws and forward to BOC when complete.

Chairman Padgett was contacted by an artist, who has been commissioned by the Congressional Medal of Honors Society, who will be painting of the Great Locomotive Chase. They will be using the Resaca Oostanaula Bridge for a backwash on the painting. Chairman Padgett is trying to talk the Congressional Medal of Honors Society to visit Calhoun and present the painting at Resaca.

Chairman Padgett provided a private tour of some family members that had ancestors fight at Van Den Corput’s battery. Family members came from Oklahoma and Illinois.

Alvin Long stated himself and Wayne Minshew has completed a letter that will be distributed to Representatives and Senators requesting additional monies for Resaca Battlefield and Museum.

Jeff Henderson gave brief overview of a local history research he has been conducting.

Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 5, 2013 @ 5:30 p.m. Alvin Long made motion to adjourn; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:57 p.m.
