Chairman Talley called the meeting to order and advised all present of the sign-up sheets available for those who wish to address the Planning Commission on any of the zoning or variance change applications. Chairman Talley also welcomed John Willis with the Calhoun Times.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Ricky Smith to approve the minutes of the previous meeting of June 13, 2011. Randy Rule seconded the motion. All voted aye. The minutes were approved as written.
REZONING APPLICATION #Z11-04, GARY MEALOR
Chairman Talley read rezoning application #Z11-04, Gary Mealor requesting to rezone .69 acres located at 516 Switch Connector Road, S.W., Calhoun, GA from R-1 to C-G. Mr. Mealor represented the request explaining that he had the property sold if he could acquire the C-G zoning. In September 2008 the property was rezoned from A-1 to C-1 for a clean-up shop and repair business, then in August 2010 the property was rezoned from C-G to R-1 to allow Mr. Mealor to use the garage and shop as his home. The new owner of the property lives in the adjoining property and plans to operate a car dealership from the shop. All adjoining property owners had been notified. Paige Hatley, with MACTEC acting as the Planning Consultant for Gordon County, recommends that the rezoning request identified as Application #Z11-04 be approved. Ron Free made the motion to approve the rezoning from R-1 to C-G. Randy Rule seconded the motion. All voted aye. The recommendation for approval was sent to the Board of Commissioners.
ADDITIONAL BUSINESS
There was a brief discussion on thoughts and input for guidelines of property owners who desire to keep chickens/coops on their property for personal use. An information sheet was available for each Planning Commission member pointing out what some of the adjoining counties allow. It was strongly agreed that it should be defined for the property owners to be restricted on the number of chickens in a certain area of property and the number of roosters one could have in ratio to the chickens. The Planning Commission asked Ms. Hatley to gather information from more counties and they would meet and discuss her findings at another time.
There being no additional business, Ron Free made the motion to adjourn. Ricky Smith seconded the motion. All voted aye. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
