Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission
August 5, 2013
Regular Meeting
Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:35 p.m., welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from July 1, 2013 meeting were presented for review and approval. Jeff Henderson made motion to approve minutes; seconded by
Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.
Unfinished Business
Resaca Battlefield Park tentative opening is September 2013.
Jeff Henderson gave update on Gideon Cemetery cleanup project by Matt Landry, who is working to obtain his Eagle Scout. The cleanup, once approved, will be outside cleanup of cemetery along with cleaning blocks on the front wall. Front wall needs to be restored; Chairman Padgett stated he would like to make a donation toward the restoration of the front wall.
Chairman Padgett stated he received two additional calls in regards to cemeteries, one located in Sugar Valley and the other off Highway 136.
Gordon County Historical Society met last week. Chairman Padgett stated repairs and updates are currently being done on the building. Jeff Henderson stated the old doll room will be remodeled and be a historical room with history of Gordon County.
GPS markers project will resume this upcoming fall.
New Business
The Calhoun Times will be featuring another Civil War section (1862-1863) in the Past Times publication.
Chairman Padgett met with Ursula Desrosier in regards to HPC By-Laws.
Chairman Padgett handed out copy of HPC 2013-2018 goals. (copy filed with minutes)
Brief discussion of hand out.
Chairman Padgett informed Jeff Henderson of HPC training made available by State of Georgia.
Chairman Padgett stated elections for HPC are due but will postpone until next meeting when all members are present.
Ursula stated she was contacted by an individual in regards to using Fort Wayne site as part of a 5K run, taking place next weekend. Ursula questioned HPC members on their opinions of historical sites being used by the public for various events. There was brief discussion to using historical sites for events. Ursula suggested HPC prepare a recommendation for the board in regards to this. Chairman Padgett suggested meeting with county attorney, Suzanne Hutchinson, and gather input from her from a legal stand point.
Adjournment
Next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 3, 2013, due to Labor Day holiday being first Monday in September.
Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to adjourn; seconded by Jeff Henderson. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:02 p.m.
