Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
August 6, 2012
Regular Meeting
Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:30 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from July 9, 2012 were presented for review and approval. Jane Powers Weldon made motion to approve minutes; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.
Unfinished Business
Chairman Padgett informed commission that Resaca State Battlefield and Fort Wayne Park projects are progressing as scheduled.
Gordon County Historical Society’s next scheduled meeting is Thursday, August 16 @ 7 p.m. at the Calhoun Depot. A covered dish meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. with meeting to follow at 7 p.m. Jane Powers Weldon encouraged everyone to attend. Carmen Shuler, new president of Friends of New Echota, will be the guest speaker.
The dolls remaining at the Historical Society will be auctioned through a silent auction.
Chairman Padgett stated he obtained GPS readings on a few of the historic markers in Gordon County. A Friends of Resaca driving tour for the Resaca Battlefield was distributed amongst the commission. Chairman Padgett suggested a similar brochure be produced once all the GPS readings have been obtained for all the historic markers in the county. (Friends of Resaca brochure on file with minutes).
New Business
Chairman Padgett was able to take a tour of the Calhoun Times archive room. He stated the Calhoun Times is not sure if the archive room will be housed at their new location or be moved to location in Rome. He stated records are bound from 1880’s forward and are housed in a fireproof records room. There was brief discussion regarding records housed in archive room.
Upcoming training for HPC was forwarded by email to HPC members by Chairman Padgett. August 22 – 24 HPC training will be held in LaGrange and Georgia Cemetery association training will be held September 19 – 21 in Decatur.
Betty Ann Surdykowski is still working on setting up a tour for HPC to tour Yarborough home.
Chairman Padgett stated Calhoun Times is publishing a special Civil War edition.
Chairman Padgett informed HPC of a Trail of Tears meeting that will take place September 8th @ 1030 at Marietta History Center. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to do so.
Chairman Padgett expressed his thanks to the outgoing county commissioners for their support of the HPC.
Adjournment
Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4th @ 5:30 p.m. due to Labor Day holiday. Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to adjourn; seconded by Jane Powers Weldon. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:52 p.m.
