Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
August 7, 2017

Regular Meeting

Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:32 p.m.; welcoming all in attendance.
Minutes from July 10, 2017 meeting were presented for review and approval. David Mitchell made
motion to approve minutes, seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.

Commission Reports

David Mitchell stated he would like to revisit the cemeteries during cooler weather. Jim Weaver and
Chairman Padgett agreed to visit the cemeteries with David Mitchell.

Jeff Henderson received an email from Jim Langford on August 4, 2017 regarding a ‘Poorhouse’ that is
potentially located on his property on McDaniel Road. Jeff Henderson said there were possibly 6
‘Poorhouses’ in Gordon County from 1900-1910.

Jeff Henderson has been researching old doctors of Gordon County up to the era of 1961. Jeff
Henderson has researched Doctor James Carson and emailed information to HPC members regarding Dr.
Carson. Copy of email filed with minutes.

Unfinished Business

Chairman Padgett stated the parks continue to be heavily visited.

New Business

Chairman Padgett stated Southern Paranormal Investigators (SPI) visited the Confederate Cemetery on
July 15, 2017 and plan to visit again in the fall.

General Train dedication will be Friday, August 11, 2017 @ 2 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office lobby. Chairman
Padgett expressed his appreciation for Sheriff Ralston and his involvement with having the display open
to the public.

Jeff Henderson will be the guest speaker at the Historical Society meeting on August 17, 2017 @ 6:30
p.m.

Chairman Padgett stated the Atlanta History Center is working on a Resaca project. The Atlanta History
Center is being renovated. The ‘Texas’ along with the Cyclorama has been relocated to the History
Center. The History Center will have a large digital interactive screen with pictures from Resaca.

Adjournment

Chairman Padgett stated next meeting scheduled in September is on Labor Day and a new meeting date
will be determined if need be.

David Mitchell made motion to adjourned; seconded by Jim Weaver. All voted aye. Meeting was
adjourned at approximately 5:50 p.m.
