Chairman Padgett called the meeting to order at approximately 5:32 p.m. welcoming all in attendance. Minutes from September 6, 2016 meeting were presented for review and approval. Jeff Henderson made motion to approve minutes; seconded by Betty Ann Surdykowski. All voted aye.
Chairman Padgett stated there was a tour at the Battlefield this past weekend of approximately 35 individuals from the metro Atlanta area.
Jeff Henderson attended a meeting regarding kiosk being placed at the boat ramps by River Alliance. The costs of the kiosk are approximately $2300/kiosk. The kiosk would be placed at Hwy 225 boat ramp at New Echota and Hwy 156 boat ramp. River Alliance is seeking donations to assist in paying for the kiosks.
Chairman Padgett informed HPC of resignation of Alvin Long due to other obligations he has. Chairman Padgett thanked Mr. Long for his continued. Betty Ann Surdykowski and Jeff Henderson were reappointed for another 3 year term to the HPC at previous BOC meeting. Commissioner Hood is reaching out to possible replacements for Alvin Long’s position on the HPC.
Chairman Padgett stated easement violation on Chitwood Farm has been turned over to County Ordinance; unsure if any action has taken place regarding the violation.
Gordon County operated Civil War Parks have been running smoothly and attendance has been heavy.
Chairman Padgett forwarded letter from HPC to Board of Commissioners in regard to benches being placed at the Resaca Battlefield Historic Site. (letter filed with minutes along with bench description)
Chairman Padgett met with Don Holley and representatives from Northwest Georgia Regional Commission in regards to applying for the Recreation Trail Grant on Thursday September 29, 2016. BOC will have this item on their agenda at their next scheduled meeting. The grant is a matching grant and would entail concreting wayside park loops to make them handicap accessible, plant one or two shade trees along the area, and continue the concrete walking path down to first creek bridge at Camp Creek. Grant will be awarded Spring 2017.
Chairman Padgett presented proposal to HPC of the 123rd New York Marker, valued at $9,000, to be placed adjacent to Chitwood Road at the Gordon County easement. (photo description of marker filed with minutes). Marker is set to be dedicated in May 2017. HPC briefly discussed marker location. Betty Ann Surdykowski made motion to approve marker; seconded by Jeff Henderson. All voted aye. Chairman Padgett will forward request to BOC for approval by Gordon County.
Betty Ann Surdykowski shared article in Calhoun Times about Bethesda Baptist Church with HPC.
Chairman Padgett stated next scheduled meeting is Monday November 7, 2016. Jeff Henderson made motion to adjourn; seconded by David Mitchell. All voted aye. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:47 p.m.
