Update Posted on 2/7/2020
At the February 4, 2020 Board of Commissioners work session, the Chairperson for the Board of Elections and Voter Registration presented several issues concerning the upcoming election year.
The new election equipment required by the State of Georgia is much larger than the old system. The new system requires approximately 3,000 square feet of space for storage and access. In addition, the new equipment must be charged monthly and requires specific amperage on the electrical circuits. The new State of Georgia rules dictate that the storage area must be under the direct supervision of the Election Superintendent. The current elections office in the Gordon County Government Plaza has worked well, but, it is not large enough to handle the new equipment requirements.
Many counties are facing this same issue by building out new space for their Elections Offices at costs well over $100,000. Gordon County has decided to temporarily use existing available space without spending taxpayer dollars for building or buying a new building. The temporary space is on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex which was vacated in anticipation of the SPLOST renovation project scheduled to begin at the first of next year. Gordon County will also take advantage of grants from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office for the purchase of shelving and tables for the new election equipment. This plan should minimize costs this year while providing time to plan for the most expedient solution for the future.
The County is fortunate to have space available on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex for the remainder of the Presidential Election year. This space will meet the requirements for the storage needs, security, and will have enough area to host the early elections for what is expected to be a very large turnout anticipated or this Presidential election year.
During the remainder of this year, Gordon County will evaluate the long term solution for the new Elections Office needs that have come about as a result of the State mandates for new equipment.
